The outbreak of the coronavirus has created extra stress for people around the world. It’s no secret we’re living in unusual and largely unprecedented times. The good news is we have suggestions on ways to reduce anxiety and relieve stress, which is better for your overall health.

News and information is changing quickly. And while staying informed about the coronavirus at the national, state and local level, is important, managing your stress and anxiety is just as important. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends reducing stress using these techniques.
- Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
- Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.
- Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
- Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
We Prefer to Think Of It as Distant Socializing
Social distancing is a term that has been used a lot over the past few weeks. But what does that mean? Current suggestions are to avoid groups larger than 10 people and stay at least 6 feet apart. However, it doesn’t mean you have to cut yourself off from connections. Here are a few ways you can stay connected to your loved ones and community:
- Use technology to stay connected: Talk to friends and loved ones by phone and video chat.
- Take a walk around the block.
- Write letters to people in your community.
- Talk to neighbors keeping a safe distance, like through a fence.
- If you are in a lockdown situation spend time with those you live with. It’s ok to take a break from technology and nurture relationships.
- Build community by checking in on friends, family and neighbors regularly. Assist where you can.
- Show kindness and patience. Remember, we’re all in this together and a small act of kindness goes a long way and can also improve your sense of purpose and well-being.
