Does CBD Oil Help You Sleep? Here’s What to Know

Do you have trouble sleeping? From insomnia to nightmares to night sweats, there is a whole host of issues that can prevent you from getting the beautiful night’s sleep that you need.

Whether you have trouble sleeping on a nightly basis or just on occasion, it’s important to know that sleep is an absolutely essential part of life. Sleep allows both your mind and body to recharge. And, a good night’s sleep can leave you refreshed, ready for the day ahead.

More importantly, sleep allows the body to remain in good health. Without enough quality sleep, your brain can’t function properly. A lack of sleep can negatively affect your ability to think clearly and concentrate.

According to the Sleep Foundation, most adults require between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night. Children and teenagers require more.

And the fact remains: the day-to-day stressors of life – from issues at work to family feuds – can greatly inhibit our ability to sleep.

So what’s a viable solution?

While there are many over-the-counter pills and supplements advertised to help with sleep, many are now looking for healthier, more organic alternatives.

Several studies have shown that CBD Oil can help you sleep.  And, we’ve experienced this first-hand.

Here’s what you need to know about CBD Oil and sleep.

Rapidly rising in popularity as a sleep aid, CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is found in cannabis.

Unlike THC, which is also found in cannabis, CBD does not contain any psychoactive properties that result in a “high.”

Recently, CBD has gained a great deal of support for it’s medicinal uses, as it contains natural properties that can soothe the body and mind and help with achieving better sleep.

When considering a CBD oil, it’s important to look at how the product is made. The preferred method is full-spectrum, or whole plant extract.

At Gulf South Organics, we’re dedicated to improving the lives of others by offering only the highest-quality full—spectrum CBD oil extracts.

In fact, our CBD oil is Vapor Distilled using a patented process from organically-grown Colorado hemp. We use heated air to extract CBD without any solvents or chemicals. All of our products are full-spectrum, vegan, non-GMO, non-toxic, and gluten-free.

You’ve probably never heard of it before, but your body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which helps your body maintain a state of homeostasis. Humans rely on homeostasis to keep their core temperature around 98.6 degrees so that their bodies maintain proper function. Essentially, homeostasis is the ability to maintain a persistently stable internal state.

CBD oil interacts directly with your endocannabinoid system. Your endocannabinoid system controls physiological processes, like appetite, mood, and pain sensation.

The endocannabinoid system has two kinds of receptors – CBD 1 and CB2. These receptors can be found throughout the entire body.

CB1 receptors are most concentrated in your central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found primarily in your cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and peripheral nervous systems.

The cannabinoids and other nutrients found in cannabis communicate with your CB1 and CB2 receptors, which studies show can reduce aches, pains, and other kinds of inflammation.

When you take CBD oil, its natural properties are processed through your endocannabinoid system, resulting in a calming effect for your mind and body. This, in fact, is why many studies show that taking CBD oil regularly may help you both fall and stay asleep.

Humans have an internal body that regulates sleep cycle and controls when we feel tired and when we feel alert.

This internal body clock operates on a 24-hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm.

Circadian Rhythm: What it is, why it's important, and how to fix yours –

Your circadian rhythm responds to the light in your environment. As the Sleep Foundation explains, your brain contains a region of cells known as the hypothalamus and a cluster of cells within the hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The suprachiasmatic nucleus processes signals when your eyes are exposed to natural or artificial light.

Most living creatures have a circadian rhythm, by the way.

As natural light (i.e. sunlight) disappears, your body releases melatonin, which induces drowsiness. In the morning, when sunlight reappears, your body releases cortisol, which causes you to have more energy.

Because CBD oil contains properties that help your mind and body relax, it can lead to a better night’s sleep.

If you’ve ever had trouble sleeping, than you’ve likely tried some of the more common sleep aids.

Treating sleep issues often starts with behavior therapy, which can include relaxation techniques, sleep restriction therapy, sleep hygiene practices, and cognitive restructuring.

While these techniques can be effective, many people still require medications. Some of these medications you’ve probably heard of, like Ambien and Lunesta. These medications can have severely negative side effects.

Benzodiazepines like Xanax can also help people sleep, but doctors do not recommend them as a sleep aid because of high abuse potential.

Doctors also don’t recommend antihistamines (i.e. Benadryl) for sleep unless a patient requires them for another purpose.

This is why CBD Oil can be a healthy and effective alternative.

In recent years, there has been significant public interest in the benefits of CBD oil.  As such, researchers have been endlessly studying its effects on the mind and body.

Several studies have indicated that moderate to high dosages of CBD can lead to improved sleep.

One study in particular found that, when compared with a placebo, a CBD dosage of 160 milligrams increased the subjects’ sleep duration.

In another study, researchers found that subjects’ cortisol levels decreased when participants took 300 or 600 mg of CBD oil.

Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, and levels generally peak in the morning. However, those with insomnia may have high levels of cortisol at night. Having high levels of cortisol at night is often associated with nightmares.

Another study that lasted 3 months tested 103 participants who showed signs of anxiety and sleep deprivation. Participants were given CBD dosages ranging from 25 to 175 mg. During the study, researchers followed up with the participants regularly.

After the first follow-up, nearly 70% of participants reported improved sleep.  After the second follow-up, nearly 60% of participants reported improved sleep.

That said, you need to decide what’s best for you.

No matter what you decide, there’s no question that sleep is vital to living a healthy, happy life. So, please make sure that you take sleep seriously and adopt a nighttime routine that works for you.

Having a nighttime routine is essential for a good night’s sleep. It allows both your mind and your body to relax before you hit the hay.

Here are some tips for a better night’s sleep:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time. Every day. Even on weekends.
  • Eat dinner at least a few hours before bed. This gives your body enough time to start the digestion process. Eating too close to bedtime can lead to restlessness.
  • Avoid stimulants (i.e. caffeine) for at least a few hours before bedtime.
  • Keep your bedroom clean and cool.
  • Take a hot shower or warm bath before bed.
  • Avoid screen time before bed. The blue light from your cell phone, tablet or TV can affect your natural sleep responses.
