Can CBD Oil Help Your Migraines?

Can CBD Oil Help Your Migraines?

By now you probably know that CBD oil is being used to help with a variety of ailments, from aches and pains and seizures, to depression and anxiety.  Some research now suggests that CBD may help with one ailment that, for many people, is truly debilitating: the migraine.

Do you experience migraines?

Many people regularly suffer from excruciating migraine headaches and struggle to find relief. Often, the passage of time seems to be the only true remedy for a migraine.

But a growing body of research shows that CBD may be effective at treating migraines.

While migraine is often associated with painful, throbbing headaches, it is actually a neurological condition that can cause a variety of symptoms. In addition to intense headaches, these symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, numbness or tingling, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Migraines are often genetic and can affect people of all ages. However, women are more likely than men to suffer from migraines.

Doctors typically diagnose migraines based on clinical history and reported symptoms. The two most well-known types of migraine are those without aura (common migraines) and those with aura (classic migraines).

Specialists point out that migraine symptoms can begin one or two days before the actual headache. This is often referred to as Prodome Stage. During this stage, symptoms include:

  • depression
  • low energy
  • frequent yawning
  • hyperactivity
  • irritability
  • neck stiffness

In common migraines – or migraines with aura – the aura occurs after the prodrome stage. Symptoms during this stage may include difficulty speaking, tingling sensations in your face, arms, or legs, seeing bright spots, and temporary loss of vision.

The next and most severe phase is the Attack Phase. Symptoms can last from a few hours to a few days and symptoms may include:

  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • throbbing head pain
  • vomiting
  • sensitivity to light and sound

After the migraine itself – or the attack phase – people often experience the Postdrome phase, which is usually characterized by changes in mood and a mild headache.

Strangely, researchers haven’t been able to identify a definitive cause for migraine headaches. But they have been able to identify a number of contributing factors. One factor is a decrease in serotonin levels.

Other factors that often lead to a migraine include:

  • bright lights
  • stress
  • dehydration
  • hormonal changes in women
  • loud sounds
  • intense physical activity
  • lack of sleep
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • traveling
  • certain foods, including: caffeine, aspartame and MSG

As we eluded to above, migraines can’t actually be cured. And, many people simply wait them out. Of course, your doctor can help you manage migraines by treating symptoms as they occur. Treatment plans generally depend on your age, how frequently you have migraines, the type of migraine, the severity of your migraines, and whether or not you have other health problems.  but your doctor can help you manage them so you get them less often and treat symptoms when they occur.

Common migraine treatments include:

  • Self-care remedies like Yoga, Acupressure and Lavender Oil
  • Over-the-counter medications like Tylenol.
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Hormone therapy
  • Other alternative forms of care like meditation and acupuncture.

While the FDA has yet to approve CBD for migraines, a growing body of research suggest that CBD oil can be particularly useful in helping migraines.

According to a report by the American Migraine Foundation, CBD oil has promise as a treatment for migraine headaches.

In fact, there is a significant amount of clinical data showing that CBD is effective at treating chronic pain and other conditions. A couple of examples:

  • In a 2012 study, CBD was found to relieve several types of chronic pain and inflammation.
  • In 2016, Pharmacotherapy conducted a survey and found that medical marijuana can reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. Users reported a 50% reduction in migraines.
  • A 2020 review has found that CBD can help relieve chronic pain, improve sleep, and reduce inflammation.

Additionally, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence suggesting that CBD may be an effective treatment for migraines.

Do a Google search, and you’ll find many stories from people who confirm that CBD oil has helped their migraines.

CBD, which is one of more than 100 cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, has been shown to ease pain because it affects specific receptors in the brain. These receptors are part of a larger endocannabinoid system that plays a role in pain and inflammation in the body.

Again, research has has linked medical cannabis and CBD to:

  • pain relief
  • easing nausea
  • reducing inflammation
  • anticonvulsive effects

Migraine sufferers often experience the symptoms mentioned above. It has been estimated that 15% of people worldwide suffer from migraines. In the United States, head pain is the 5th leading cause of ER visits.

Migraines occur when the threshold for pain signaling drops due to to inflammatory agents.

CBD’s analgesic effects, anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-nausea qualities have been shown to help relieve the symptoms associate with migraines.

Again, migraines have no known cure. And while the research around CBD as a treatment for migraines is promising, you can still take steps to prevent migraines from happening in the first place.

  • Learn what triggers your migraines.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Don’t skip meals.
  • Make sure you’re getting enough quality sleep.
  • Quit smoking and cut back on alcohol consumption.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Take necessary steps to reduce stress in your life.
