Can CBD Help With Depression? Research is Promising

It’s no secret that Canabidiol, or CBD, has gained tremendous popularity in recent years, due to the mounds of research suggesting that it can help with a number of ailments, including aches and pains, insomnia, nausea and more.

Now, many are turning to CBD oil to help with depression.

CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids that occur natural in the cannabis – or marijuana – plant. Those who may be unfamiliar with CBD, or cannabis in general, often confuse CBD with THC.  THC is the component that causes a “high” when consumed. CBD, however, is not psychoactive and does not cause a high, which is a contributing factor to its rising popularity.

While CBD may not be for everyone, there is growing research suggesting that CBD oil and other CBD products can help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at CBD and depression.  But, please remember, if you are experiencing severe depression, you should talk to your doctor or therapist immediately. This article is meant purely for information purposes.

CBD can be taken in many different forms, including oral sprays, capsules, sublingual drops, E-liquids, salves, creams, and balms. CBD may also be mixed in with foods and beverages.

It’s important to note that CBD may help with depression only if it is ingested.

Because CBD products are marketed as supplements and aren’t subjected to strict regulation, customers often don’t know exactly what they are getting in terms of purity, quality, and safety.

At Gulf South Organics, we strive to deliver the highest-quality CBD products while educating the public about the benefits of hemp and CBD oil. Our extracts are made using organically grown Colorado hemp that is rich in terpenes and CBD and trace amounts of THC.

Additionally, we use a patented Vapor Distillation™ extraction method that nurtures and preserves naturally occurring cannabinoids (CBD), flavonoids, terpenes and plant matter.

This process is vital to creating our full-spectrum CBD oils. We don’t use harsh chemicals or solvents. Instead, we use a proprietary method of precise bursts of heated air to extract the oil from our plants. The air pushes through the finely-ground plant matter. It then distills into a vapor that we condense into our 100% natural product.

Though CBD has a number of purported mental health benefits, the research on its use is somewhat limited – albeit very promising. And researchers continue to conduct thorough studies as CBD’s popularity grows.

To date, several studies have shown that CBD may help alleviate symptoms of depression by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that has a range of functions in your body, including the regulation of mood.

Many types of anti-depressant drugs, for example, are thought to work be increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

The truth is, however, that while serotonin is part of the big picture, the jury is still out on whether more or less serotonin is the answer. And it depends widely on each individual.

Depression, in fact, has been linked to many other neurotransmitter imbalances, as well as inflammation in the body and brain changes stemming from trauma or chronic stress. Pharmaceutical companies often perpetuate the idea that depression is caused only by a serotonin deficiency.

Again, if you are experiencing symptoms of major depression, you should consult with your doctor or a qualified mental health professional as soon as possible.

It’s normal to feel sad, stressed, or lonely at times – particularly after a traumatic event.  Life is full of struggles, which can lead to periods of melancholy.

However, if these feelings never seem to subside and are preventing you from living an active life, you may be experiencing depression.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Trouble concentrating and making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Overwhelming pessimism
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of interest in activities you once found pleasurable
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Loss of appetite
  • Suicidal ideation

While research shows that CBD may help relieve symptoms of depression, it’s critical that you speak to your doctor first.

Researchers are constantly studying CBD and how it affects a variety of ailments, including depression.

CBD has recently gained approval from the FDA to treat epileptic seizures, and there is good evidence to suggest it also helps with depression.

But why are epileptic seizures relevant?

Studies have show that CBD protects specific neurons in the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that shrinks when you are depressed. In rodents, CBD has been shown to reduce death in the hippocampus. In humans, research shows that chronic THC use can shrink the hippocampus, while CBD prevents this shrinking.

Scientists think that CBD could help protect the hippocampus due to its impact on the endocannabinoid system, as well as Brain-Derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) – a protein that helps existing neurons survive.

One study showed that CBD increased levels of anandamide in the hippocampus in mice. And multiple rodent studies have shown that CBD increases BDNF levels in the hippocampus while reducing symptoms of depression.

Additionally, studies have shown that CBD activates 5-HT1A, a type of serotonin receptor that controls a variety of other neurotransmitters. This is the same receptor activated by the antianxiety drug, Buspirone.

CBD has been shown to have some benefits over antidepressant medications.

In a study from 2018, for example, researchers announced that CBD has promise as a fast-acting antidepressant.

And in 2019, an animal study found that CBD has a fast antidepressant like effect that lasts. Most antidepressant meds take at least two weeks to start working.

CBD has also been shown to have far fewer side effects that antidepressant drugs. Many antidepressants cause insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and mood swings. Researchers have found that CBD does not cause any of these issues.

Anxiety and depression often go hand in hand. But, anxiety can be a problem all its own. And, a pretty common one.

A recent American Psychiatric Association (APA) poll found that 39% of adults said they are more anxious now than they were last year. However, only 19% reported they were less anxious! In fact, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America says around 40 million Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder, but 37% of people receive some form of treatment.

For those who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) says that CBD has been shown to reduce stress in animals such as rats. Research continues to be done on humans, and anecdotal evidence is promising.

Additionally, CBD may benefit people with other forms of anxiety, like PTSD and social anxiety disorder.
